The Ozil AI Trend, Explained

The Ozil AI trend is a run of AI edits of one Mesut Özil goal — his late winner away at Ludogorets in 2016 — with someone else on the ball. People put themselves, a friend or a character in Özil's place: the same keeper rushing out, the same two defenders sliding past, the same empty net.

The goal behind it: Özil vs Ludogorets, 2016

On 1 November 2016, Arsenal came back from two goals down to win 3–2 at Ludogorets in the Champions League group stage. Özil scored the late winner: he lifted the ball over the onrushing keeper, stopped as two defenders slid past him and rolled it into the empty net. The viral edits run the full 15 seconds of that move. (Some AI tool sites call it the Ozil bounce goal; the Ozil bounce is actually his trademark finish from other games.)

  1. 0–2 sThe keeper rushes out

The keeper charges off his line to close you down.

  2. 2–4 sChip over the dive

You lift the ball over him as he dives.

  3. 4–7 sControl on the bounce

You take it down before it runs away.

  4. 7–12 sThe defenders slide past

You stop dead and two defenders slide by.

  5. 12–15 sInto the empty net

    You roll it in.

A clip that stops after the chip misses the best part. Check the length before you post.

How the Ozil AI trend spread

Dates and view counts are what we saw on TikTok and Google on the day noted.

  1. 2016 – 2026
The goal lives on as a highlight clip.

  2. 9–10 October 2026
A TikTok AI edit with someone else in Özil’s place takes off; by 13 October it had 3.8 million views. "ozil ai" shows up in Google Trends on 10 October, next to rising searches for the tools: CapCut, Dreamina, Higgsfield.

  3. 12–14 October
Tutorials take over. An English one posted on 12 October passed 749,000 views; a CapCut template tutorial went from 118,000 to 367,000 views in half a day on 14 October.

  4. 14 October
Spanish tutorials ("cómo hacer el video de Özil con IA") and Portuguese ones start appearing.

Why it caught on

  1. Everyone knows the move
Keeper out, chip, two defenders sliding past, empty net. It reads in a second, even if you don't follow football.

  2. The wrong person is the joke
An office shirt, a hoodie or a five-a-side kit in a Champions League night match is funnier than a perfect copy of Özil.

  3. It only needs one photo
The CapCut template and AI tools take a single picture, so friends tag each other and make a version of everyone.

How people make the Ozil AI video

  1. The free CapCut template
Puts your face over the original clip. Template posts run about 5–6 seconds and stop after the chip. Step by step in the guide →

  2. A prompt in Dreamina or Higgsfield
Makes a new clip in a generic stadium from your photo and a written prompt. Results vary from try to try. Copy the prompt →

  3. One photo on Ozil AI
You in the original shot, all 15 seconds, with your face, build and clothes. Packs from $6.99. Make my Ozil AI video →
